I painted this piece to showcase the natural beauty of this bird, with an emphasis on the flash of blue on the tail feathers when the light catches them. I also wanted to draw attention to the thoughtful expression so often displayed by magpies with their famous quizzical head tilt.
 
Magpies are among the world's most intelligent animals. They have shown the ability to make tools, imitate human speech, play games and are even able to recognize themselves in a mirror test!  
 
The folklore surrounding Magpies varies greatly around the world. In China, they are called the 'bird of joy' and are thought to bring good fortune. I always feel lucky when I see a Magpie!
